Module A1: The Marine Insurance Act 1906 and related principles of insurance.
Module A2: Hull and Cargo claims.
Module A3: Upstream and Offshore Energy Claims (this paper can be taken as an alternative to Module A2 in order to achieve the AAA's Associateship qualification).
These modules can be taken in any order and the pass mark is 60% per paper with a distinction being awarded for 80%. By passing both Module A1 and either A2 or A3 a candidate achieves the qualification of Associate of the Association of Average Adjusters. However failure to continue as a Member of the AAA would result in that person not being listed as an Associate on the website nor in the Annual Report.
The papers are of 2½ hours duration. Specimen papers and a list of topics for each examination are available for downloading from this page. Roughly 75% of the Module A2 will be related to Hull and Machinery claims, with the emphasis on the standard clauses and claims for damage repairs; only an outline knowledge of general average is required.
Please note that with effect from December 2019, the syllabuses for Modules A1 and A2 have been updated - these updated syllabuses will be applicable to the examinations scheduled for October 2020 and subsequently thereafter, until further notice. We can confirm that for Candidates planning to take either or both of these Modules in March 2020, there are no alterations to the existing published syllabuses, which will remain available on the website until the completion of the March 2020 examination session. To assist candidates, there is a webinar podcast and copy of the slides within the documents tab to the right of this screen.
